Overview:
Located in the scenic Marshwood neighborhood of The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, GA, this modern coastal-inspired kitchen renovation blends creativity, expertise, and personal passion. The homeowners, one of whom is a designer and cabinetry salesperson at Kitchen Design Solutions (KDS)—have designed thousands of kitchens over the years. Yet, when it came to their own home, this project became a deeply personal expression of style and function.
The entire design began with a single photo from a moodboard online that captured the homeowner’s imagination: modern coastal farm house style with crisp white upper cabinets paired with coastal bold blue lowers. That image became the blueprint for everything that followed, guiding color choices, layout, and finish details to create a timeless and inviting space filled with Lowcountry charm.
The Problem
The original kitchen lacked both personality and practicality. The homeowners, who love to entertain, struggled with:
- Limited pantry storage that made hosting cumbersome.
- Outdated appliances that didn’t fit their cooking style.
- A layout that disrupted flow between kitchen, dining, and family spaces.
While they envisioned a two-tone color scheme inspired by the magazine photo, the idea of going bold with deep blue cabinetry initially felt like a risk. Would the color overpower the space? Could it remain timeless? These were the kinds of real design dilemmas that even professionals face when designing for themselves.
Practical challenges also arose:
- Adding a scullery kitchen required clever space planning.
- Integrating dual pantries and a second island without making the room feel crowded.
- Coordinating deliveries from multiple suppliers to keep the project on schedule.
