HHI Kitchen Transformation Case Study

Salt Air & Style: A Coastal Kitchen Design in Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head Island

View Full Project Photos

Overview: A Coastal Kitchen Built for Real Life

When this homeowner set out to renovate the kitchen of her second home in Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head Island, SC, she had a clear vision: shaker-style cabinetry, a relaxed coastal aesthetic, and a space built to handle a house full of family during holidays and vacations. She knew from the start she wanted beaded inset cabinets, and Shiloh’s Hanover Beaded Inset in Polar on maple delivered exactly the crisp, timeless character she had in mind, perfectly suited to the coastal surroundings of Hilton Head Island.

The existing kitchen was large and bright, but its dated layout and two-tiered angled island stood in the way of how she actually wanted to live. Kitchen Design Solutions worked alongside her to turn that vision into a fully functional, jaw-dropping renovation, completed by Easter and ready for a full house.

The Problem: A Beautiful Space That Wasn’t Working

Large kitchens come with their own set of challenges, and this Palmetto Dunes home was no exception. The kitchen had generous square footage and natural light pouring in from multiple windows, but those same windows left very little usable wall space. The island with raised bar seating was impractical, storage was minimal, and the kitchen had no pantry of any kind.

The core challenge: fitting everything a busy Hilton Head vacation home kitchen demands into essentially two working walls, without sacrificing style or function.

Common kitchen renovation challenges this project solved:

  • Outdated split-height island layout with poor functionality
  • Limited wall space due to large windows
  • No pantry storage
  • Lack of prep and entertaining space
  • Insufficient trash solutions for large gatherings

"Amy is meticulous with paying attention to detail, and I am too, so we worked very well together. She took her time to make sure that literally every cabinet, every drawer was the size we needed and had the function we needed. Everything had its purpose, how we would live in this house. The installer was so, so good. He took his time to get the details right and make sure everything was fitted properly and that we were happy. We had a little glitch with the timing of delivery, but KDS as a whole jumped in immediately and solved the problem. Everything came together and we made our deadline. I would say five stars, A-plus. I would highly, highly, highly recommend them."

The Solution: Custom Design with Every Detail Intentional

KDS designer Amy approached the Palmetto Dunes project with the same level of attention to detail the homeowner herself brings. Every cabinet and drawer was sized and assigned a purpose based on how the family would actually use the space, right down to designing around the Wolf M Series range and Cove panel-ready dishwasher she had selected.

To make the most of limited wall space, specialty elements like a built-in bar and a full pantry were incorporated into outlying walls, adding significant storage and function without crowding the main kitchen zone. For the stand-alone pantry mimicking a cupboard and dry bar, the design called for something with warmth and visual texture. Shiloh’s Malibu Reeded Beaded Inset in a White Sands stain on alder wood was the perfect complement to the Polar White on maple throughout, giving those areas their own distinct, layered character while keeping the overall palette cohesive and very much at home on Hilton Head Island.

Thoughtful details made the biggest impact. A slotted baking sheet section, vertical organizer above the Wolf wall oven keeps bakeware organized and accessible, a detail the homeowner had always wanted. A full built-in pantry was designed from scratch, solving a storage gap the kitchen had never addressed. And because this Hilton Head home hosts large groups regularly, two separate trash pull-outs were incorporated: one at the island and one at an end cabinet, so guests can discard without stepping into the working kitchen.

When a delivery issue threatened the project timeline, KDS responded immediately and resolved it without delay. The kitchen was complete and fully functional by the Easter deadline, right on schedule for a house full of family at the Palmetto Dunes property.

The Result: A Five-Star Kitchen That Works Hard

The finished kitchen is a seamless blend of coastal elegance and practical function, a natural fit for life in Palmetto Dunes. Shiloh Hanover Beaded Inset cabinetry in Polar maple brings a clean, bright foundation. The Malibu Reeded Beaded Inset pantry and bar cabinets in White Sands on alder add depth and character. The result is a kitchen that performs at the highest level, whether it is a quiet weeknight on Hilton Head or a holiday with a house full of guests.
